The
“Emulsion Transfer” process was discovered in Europe
during the early 90s and has since attracted numerous photographers
and artists. This technique is still considered relatively new and
is constantly evolving.
My images begin in the form of a 35 mm slide. Using a slide printer
the image is transferred onto Polaroid peel-apart film (Polacolor
ER). After exposing the image and developing the print it is soaked
in hot water in order to isolate the very fine and transparent emulsion.
The next step is one of the most creative in the whole process.
The image is ready to be transferred to a wide variety of surfaces
such as watercolor paper, handmade paper, a natural fabric, glass
or mirrors. The emulsion can be stretched, wrinkled or torn and
is given a unique, sometimes surreal feeling during the sculpting.
In turn this creates a unique new print each and every time. No
two prints will ever be identical and this is part of the exciting
magic that occurs.
Imagination, freedom and playfulness are my guides…
